Benefits of fasting
Fasting or sawm is such an integral part of being a Muslim. One of the five pillars of Islam, we dedicate the entire month of Ramadan to this act of worship. Fasting protects you from many illnesses in your soul, heart, and body and offers great benefits. Fasting also keeps you healthy and away from harm.
Fasting is a kind of spiritual and physical remedy. If a fasting person follows various rules and guidelines related to fasting, his mind and body will benefit most from fasting. In addition, it removes harmful substances that easily enter the body.
Allah has said:
“O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you—as it was for those before you—so perhaps you will become mindful of Allah” (2:183)
Let us now discuss some of the numerous benefits of fasting:
1. Fasting aids you towards healthy blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and healthier weight.
2. Fasting for a month can detoxify your body, removing all the harmful toxins from the fat deposits, thus allowing us to live a healthier life.
3. Fasting maintains a healthy gut. It improves the immune and digestive processes.
4. Fasting boosts our mental health. It establishes good habits, and self-control if done correctly. It also brings about willpower, discipline, patience, and determination in a person’s character.
