Amulets in Islam

Amulets in Islam

In this article, we will be discussing hadiths about amulets and how they are forbidden in Islam.

In general, it is impermissible to wear amulets even if they are from the Holy Quran.

As it was narrated by Ahmed, the Prophet SAW said:

“Whoever wears an amulet, may Allah not fulfill his need, and whoever wears a sea-shell, may Allah not give him peace.”

Abu Bashir Al-Ansari narrated:

"I was in the company of the Messenger of Allah SAW on one of his journeys. The Messenger of Allah SAW sent a messenger and ordered him not to let any necklace of string or any kind of necklaces (the narrator doubted the exact wording of the Prophet) round the necks of camels except it should be cut off."

From this, we learned that attaching strings to animals in order to repel harm is as prohibited as attaching amulets and people must be warned against all forms of polytheism so that their true beliefs may be properly maintained.

Imam Ahmad related that Ruwayfi' narrated:

"The Messenger of Allah SAW said, 'O Ruwayfi'! You may live for a long time after I am gone, so, tell people that if anyone ties his beard or wears a string round his neck to ward off the evil eye, or cleanses himself (after defecation or urination) with animal dung or bone, then Muhammad has nothing to do with him. "

What’s interesting to note is that this hadith is also a proof of Muhammad’s SAW prophethood, since the Prophet foretold that Ruwayfi` would lead a long life and he had a long lifespan, dying in 56 A.H.

Wearing a necklace to repel harm is prohibited, as it is an act of polytheism. And the aforementioned prohibitions are classified as major sins.

People should be fully informed about the legal duties and the prohibitions with which they must comply.
